Magy Apartment

Private Residence

Shanghai, China

Designed in 1936 by the firm of Leonard, Veysseyre & Kruze, the Magy Apartment building at 24 Rte Boissezon (now Fuxing Xi Lu) was one of the most fashionable and exclusive apartment blocks in Shanghai at the time.  When K2 began their design work on the 3rd level, the building needed modernization and repair: the flat had been subdivided into 3 separate apartments; the hot water radiators and other utilities had been torn out, and the building was occupied by lifelong residents who had been good servants of the communist regime. K2’s challenge included restoring many of the unique details of the original, such as the metal door pulls and the terrazzo floor, while adding new radiators, insulated windows, and replacing the damaged wooden floors. Much of the 1930's character was preserved while creating a modern residence commensurate with the intended elegance of the project and the neighborhood.
