The Capitol Hill home of a professional couple and their two children needed a heart. Positioned at the center of the two-story townhouse, the kitchen should have been the hub of daily life—but it wasn’t. The layout was awkward, the storage insufficient, and the space too cramped for cooking, dining, or gathering. Most of all, its blandness stood in stark contrast to the family’s bold and expressive tastes. K2 responded by demolishing the outdated space and replacing it with an open plan that not only allows for multiple cooks, but also a dining area. Making use of the high ceiling, a double row of storage was created to store everything from teas to luggage. The refrigerator, dishwasher, trash and recycle bins are all concealed with panel fronts, creating a more dressed up look for the open plan. Taking cues from the family’s love of confident art and bold color, the new kitchen reflects an exuberance and optimism in their home and burgeoning neighborhood.
